Tiki House

Beautiful upcycled shabby chic and vintage furniture! I would love you to meet Kirsten from Tiki House

I am wife to Ray who truly is one of the best. We have 5 children 4 at home attending school. I love my phone and anything sweet. We are never idle always doing something, whether it be for Tiki House or around our own home. I love to do anything crafty and try anything once. I get totally lost on Pinterest for hours without realising at times how long I have been on there!

Rustic Flower Holder

Starting Tiki House...
Tiki House started due to us buying a lifestyle block. We bought a 1920’s cottage the original home on our road. When we moved here with all our furniture some things just did not look right. So out came the paint and hey presto we had given our furniture a new lease of life that totally suited our new life style.
From there friends and family loved what we had done and some asked for us to do the same for their furniture. Then their friends and so on got hold of us asking if we would do the same thing so we thought let’s see if we can make what started off as a hobby something we really could do more and more. So we started a Facebook page and word of mouth proved invaluable and we have yet to look back.
While my husband works full time he also is the fix it man, the delivery man and the pick up man. So basically he is the Tiki House Man who does a lot to keep our little venture running along smoothly.
90% of our items are recycled before they are put up for sale. Love giving them a new lease of life they are so solid they will last for many more years to come.

Gorgeous Dresser

Our name came as Ray and I both love Tiki’s and we thought that it was perfect for us.

Seat Covered with Cath Kidston Oilcloth

Our routine is varied due to the kids what they have on at school. I also do Admin Contract Work. How many orders for custom paint jobs we have booked in. Love how we have the best clientele that totally understands that we are a family also as well as running a busy schedule with Tiki House.

We have a simple but very effective booking system we use to keep all our jobs in order. We have lists and more lists to help us keep on track.

Ornate Frame and Tray

Ask from the the experienced and the professionals if you are on the right track. We have a brilliant Accountant we work with now and look forward to where Tiki House will go in the future. Follow your heart it will not let you down. Don’t be afraid to ask questions you never will know if you don’t ask.

Framed Goodies!

Relaxing around here is pottering around our little farmlet. We don’t keep still very often. We have a variety of pets here that keep us busy, a huge garden and we love to do DIY in our home.

A Manrobe!

From here...
We would like to see Tiki House go onwards and upwards.

Huge thanks to all those that have been there from the start and to those we meet along the way. Thank you as Tiki House wouldn't be where it is today without you. We love doing what we do x

Raff's Closet

Beautiful handmade baby & children's items. This week I am chatting with Kerryn from Raff's Closet!

I’m a wife to Derrick and a stay at home Mum to Jonathan. I love reading, I have the worst sweet tooth ever! and love nothing more than snuggling on the couch watching a good movie.
Lazing in bed on weekend mornings with a good book is my idea of heaven, a rare treat with a 3yr old who loves being up before the birds!

Baby Bibs

Starting Raff's Closet...
I have always been creative and am driven to create things. I’ve been sewing as long as I can remember, first with my own Mum at home and then formal lessons at school. I used to make my own clothes and for many years Christmas gifts have been handmade too.

Once I left home sewing took a back seat for many years. I mucked around with sewing again once I’d met my hubby but it wasn’t until I became a Mum to Jonathan in 2011 the drive to create once again took over. Raff’s Closet was ‘born’ in 2012, driven by the other parents I’d met who loved what I kept coming out with for Jonathan and wanting the same for their own children.

Rainbow Ruffle Dress

Handmade goodness...
Yes, every item you see on my page is handmade by me. They are road-tested by my ruffian tester as much as possible before release too, so you know you are getting a quality product. If I don’t like the way it holds up, I won’t be making it for sale.

The name ‘Raff’s Closet’ was spurred by our love for Giraffes! Jonathan currently has 4 or 5 toy giraffes and at the time it was his favourite bedtime toy. It just kind of stuck!

'Colour Me Happy' Shorts

Owning a business...
I love the flexibility! To be able to work when I want to, but also being available to be Mum when I need to as well. I love talking to people, creating fun and fantastic items and the fabric! Oh the fabric…!

Baby Beanie

Staying motivated...
Lists! Lots and lots of lists. I use lists to help keep me focused and on track; I love the satisfaction of crossing items off when they are completed and being able to look back at the end of the day and feel a sense of achievement, no matter how small.

Baby Boots and Hairties

Advice for others...
I’m still learning myself! I have found a business mentor has been extremely helpful and is something I’d recommend to others. The biggest piece of advice? We all make mistakes - it’s the times we learn from them and move on that’s key. Don’t take everything to heart and trust and believe in yourself!

Mr Wolf

From here...
I’m already starting to plan my products for Summer 2014/15 and working at getting more of my items stocked in stores. If you’re in New Plymouth you can head on into Babylove and see my Bibs and Baby Boots on the shelves!

I’m also currently putting together an auction-based fundraiser for Sands.
Sands do amazing work in our communities with families who have suffered the loss of a child, be it via miscarriage, stillbirth or neonatal death. My aim in running the fundraiser is to not only raise awareness of baby loss but to also raise finances to help Sands continue their extremely important work. Keep an eye out in early August for ‘Superheros for Sands’ hitting facebook!

HAZED Winter Edition

The gorgeous HAZED arrived in my mailbox last week. It is always so exciting when it does. The Winter Edition is beautiful and is packed with 'Indie Designers' creating for weddings.

I love the layout of this magazine. It is A5 in size, perfect for your handbag and is full of wonderful photos.

In this edition Hazel 'pays homage to where it all started', back when she was planning her wedding. You will find many links to lovely businesses, recipes, a sewing tutorial, a page with fantastic events on this Winter,
and a wonderful article on finding your niche in the crafty world.

Another beautifully written and presented magazine by the team at HAZED! You can purchase your copy here ~
