Snuggle Bug

Affordable, high-quality wraps for Kiwi parents.
I am so excited to be chatting to Andrea from Snuggle Bug!

About...
I am a mum to three children (6,4 and 2) and wife to a hard working husband. Originally from Auckland, I moved to Dunedin to study at the University of Otago before settling down in Hamilton. Before becoming a mum, I worked as a social worker supporting families who had children with disabilities.

In my spare time I facilitate Toolbox Parenting Courses. I love helping families and working with them to achieve a fun and loving home environment.

Turquoise Triangles

Starting...
Snuggle Bug Carriers was established to provide affordable, high-quality baby wraps for Kiwi parents. We are passionate about baby wearing and wantto make it accessible to all parents and caregivers.

Snuggle Bug was started in 2010 not long after the birth of our second child, who was a very unsettled baby that wanted to be held almost all the time. I knew about the benefits of baby wearing from using a sling with our first child but found that this put too much strain on my back. So I did a bit of research into other carriers and discovered that baby wraps better distributed the weight of a baby, meaning they were ideal for all-day baby wearing. After locating the right material, I made what I guess could be considered the very first Snuggle Bug wrap.

My son practically lived in this wrap for the first few months of his life. He loved being carried in the wrap and I certainly loved being able to get on with my daily activities. When we were out and about, people would often come up to me and ask questions about the wrap and where they could purchase one. I started making baby wraps just as gifts for my friends but soon had requests from all sorts of people that I didn’t even know who wanted them too. It was at this point that I realised there was a real need for the need for someone to produce affordable high-quality baby wraps in New Zealand. The strong demand for our wraps has seen Snuggle Bug Carriers grow from humble beginnings to the company that it is today.

Benefits of carrying your baby...
Carrying your baby using a Snuggle Bug Wrap is one of the best, most natural things that you can do as a parent or caregiver. Babies thrive when they feel loved, secure and supported. Baby carrying allows you to provide the perfect nurturing environment for your baby as you continue with your everyday activities.

Baby carrying in the early days is also known as the 4th Trimester. This is the idea that the first 3 months of life outside of the womb are very much an extension of life in the womb for baby. Baby has spent 40 weeks hearing mums heart beat, being rocked, and having their every need attended for inside the womb. This is why newborn babies settle so well in a wrap, as they are snuggled up close to mum where they feel secure in a similar environment to being in mums tummy.

Baby carrying is a traditional style of parenting that has been practiced for centuries around the world. The popularity of baby carrying in New Zealand and other Western cultures has risen dramatically in the last decade with a better understanding of attachment parenting.

Benefits for babies:
Baby feels more secure, which reduces crying
Promotes strong attachment
Helps to ease the symptoms of reflux and colic
Enhances emotional development
Provides ideal spine support
Reduces risk of developing flat head syndrome
Stimulates brain development
Improves development of regular sleep patterns
Reduces levels of stress hormones

Benefits for parents/caregivers:
Frees your arms for other activities
Allows you to interact with other children
More economical and easier to use than a pram or stroller
Makes breastfeeding easier
Reduces the risk of postnatal depression
Very portable, ideal for travelling with infants

Love your business name...
Thank you. I have to admit that we didn’t really deliberately choose a name, it just kind of happened. I used to call our second son “my little snuggle bug” when he was being carried in a wrap as he looked so snuggled up and settled in the wrap. The name grew on me and we started calling our wraps Snuggle Bug wraps. I think it fits well with our product as babies really do just snuggle up in the wraps, appearing so snug and content next to their parent or caregiver.

Daily...
My daily routine...well with three small kids every day is different!

The day begins with checking email/Facebook to see what orders and messages have come in over night. I’m always amazed by the number of orders that we get in the wee small hours of the night. Then it’s time to get the kids ready for school and kindy.

As we live rural, our courier pickup happens first thing in the morning so all orders need to be put out for pickup the night before. This means that I have the freedom to process orders throughout the day whenever I get a chance. I try to do this while my oldest kids are at school and kindy but often it doesn’t happen until the evening when they are tucked up in bed.

Most of my day is spent trying to entertain our youngest child until the older kids get home. After that it’s the usual mad scramble to get dinner on the table, kids clean and then into bed. Evenings are spent processing any remaining orders and working on marketing opportunities or researching new products to offer.

Love about owning your own business...
I love that work (mostly) fits around family needs. It’s a great privilege to be able to work and not have the kids in care.

Owning my own business has also allowed me to support some much needed community organisations around New Zealand. We have donated a lot of time and products to various not-for-profit organisations – I love that I am able to indirectly support mums through these amazing organisations.

Teething Jewellery

Motivation...
In all honesty, as with most businesses, there have been times when I just wanted to give up. But what keeps me going is the fantastic positive feedback that we receive on an almost daily basis from our customers. It gives me so much joy knowing that our baby wraps are making a real difference to parents and caregivers throughout New Zealand.

Fantail

Advice...
I have two thoughts. First, make sure that you are totally passionate about whatever product or service that your business is about. Starting a business is a lot of hard work and unless you believe whole-heartedly about your product you’re unlikely to get through the inevitable difficulties.

Second, sort out some form of work/life balance early on. It’s very easy to get caught up effectively working 24/7 even if it’s just responding to emails/Facebook messages. Try to set specific times of the day and week when you will “do work” and other times when you will not. Remember the reason that most people start small businesses is to make work fit around life, not for it to totally take over their lives.

Geometric

Relaxing...
Relaxing - what is that :) When I get a moment I like to bake, hang out with friends and family or get creative.

I am the craft coordinator for our local Mums of Preschoolers (MOPs) and love browsing Pinterest for new craft ideas.

I find it very relaxing catching up with other mums and having a coffee and a good laugh. The house might get trashed from the kids playing but a good laugh and good company does great things for the mind and helps me unwind.

Red

From here...
Well we’ve recently completed a redesign of our wraps using a thicker, more supportive material. It took a long time/effort to find material with the right balance of stretch and support and in the end we had to get it specifically manufactured. We made this change in response to some feedback from customers and babywearing groups. Our sales have picked up noticeably since the change, which is great and indicates that our wraps are even more loved than before.

We’ve also just completed a redesign of our website to make it mobile friendly. We get a lot of orders from mums in the small hours of the night and wanted to make it easier for them to order from their phones.

After completing these two major projects, the rest of the year will be a chance to take a breath before we launch some exciting new products early next year.

Bam|+|Boo Kids

'Eczema and sensitive-skin friendly clothing for your sprouts!'
It is very exciting to chat with Toni and Martha-jane from Bam|+|Boo Kids

About...
Bam |+| Boo kids started after Martha-jane and myself couldn’t find any cool clothes for eczema kids. Both our first born developed eczema at around 6weeks old and after hours and hours of researching and scouring the internet (thanks GOOGLE!) we decided that we wanted funky clothing for them, just because they had eczema and needed super soft clothing, didn’t mean they had to look daggy! A friend of mine also put us onto Pure Fiji and their Dilo range after noticing a photo of Max on Facebook. Thank goodness she did, as after spending a lot of money on different creams and lotions that didn’t do a thing, the Dilo creams worked! We are now lucky so stock it on our website.

Martha-jane and I met at pregnancy yoga over 4 years ago – we were one of the “cheeky kids in the class” so got on really well thankfully.

Toni has 4yr old Max, and 16mth old Tate. (and husband James!)

Martha-jane has 4yr old Thomas and 12mth old Frank. (and husband Malcom!)

I must add that we are both really lucky to have very supportive husbands that have put up with all the Bam |+| Boo talk for the last two years! ☺

Bam|+|Boo Singlet

Naming Bam+Boo...
To be honest Martha-jane and I were brainstorming (while having a glass of wine!) and it popped up, we both loved it and decided that the |+| which is a bamboo shoot fitted well between the word Bamboo…. and there we have it! ☺ It was too easy and meant to be.

Bam|+|Boo Duffle Pants

Favourite product...
That’s a tricky one! The duffle pants are very popular as they grow with your child across the year – you roll the cuffs down as they grow. They are super soft, we love them, the kids love them, mums love them, they are an all-round winner. The secret favorite of ours is the flat sheet! It’s so delish and we use it for ourselves all the time (us mummies I mean!) It doubles as a lovely light blanket, pram cover, a light blanket for your kiddies single bed and is so soft and silky.

Bam|+|Boo Cot Sheet

Daily...
This is a little nuts! Our routines are not dissimilar in our homes. Up anywere from 5.30, Kiddies fed, dressed and the 4yr olds off to Kindy. The wee ones stay with us at home while we try and answer emails and respond to order queries, then its off to exercise and home to clean the house and pack orders while the little ones sleep. Then its time to pick the 4yr olds up and the afternoon/evening madness begins, dinner prep, outside for a play, dinner, baths, bed for the kiddies, then Martha-jane and I Work/meetings/skype till late into the night.

We try and take the boys to the Zoo, walking on the beach, to the park – just get them out every day as boys need to run! ☺ And it’s good for our heads too ☺

Martha-jane is a superwoman and still works part time at a real job too!

Bam |+| Boo Kids 'Royal Rolliston Hoodie' - Coming Soon!

Owning Bam|+|Boo...
We love that we are helping people. That we can work around the children, still drop them off to kindy, pick them up, go to their kindy outings. It’s all about the little people in our lives really! ☺

We love that all our hard work goes into our own brand. Its very satisfying as both Martha-jane and myself had amazing jobs pre-children and this helps satisfy us in that area!

Bam|+|Boo Hooded Towel

Staying motivated...
We are both very self motivated people – you have to be to run your own business. BUT we have each other, that’s very motivating and we are extremely thankful for what each bring to Bam |+| Boo, we are great friends and we do not talk about Bam and Boo when we are at social events together as we need to have fun too!

Bam |+| Boo Kids Onsies

Advice for others...
Research, research, research. NEVER forget the ones that have helped you along the way. They are the most important people. We have the most amazing supportive friends, so lucky!

Accept help, especially if you have small children. It is hard!!

Remind your partners (husbands, boyfriends, girlfriends etc) that they are awesome for supporting you in your new business venture.

Build great contacts with other mums and dads that have small businesses, they are a great sounding board and a good laugh when you need it.

Apply for a business mentor after 6mths of trading. It’s worth it.

SMILE, LAUGH & ENJOY the ride.

Bam|+|Boo Clothing

Time to relax...
We LOVE to go away to the beach with our families, go on dates with our husbands, exercise and spend time with our friends and their children. It’s great to have a good hearty laugh to relax, do it.

MJ also likes to run to relax ☺ I'm yet to find that relaxing ;) although we are both doing the pink duathlon in December, so I better get going!

Bam|+|Boo Facecloths

From here...
There is so much happening in the background here at Bam |+| Boo Kids, we have an amazing nutritionist onboard, a naturopath and a sleep consultant coming shortly! We have a new range being released over the next 4months and few other things we can’t tell you about yet! We are super excited about it all!

MissMollyCoddle

'Creator; collector; and curator of beautiful things, both vintage and new.'
Let's chat with Sarah from MissMollyCoddle

About...
I started MissMollyCoddle about 4 1/2 years ago, not long after having my first baby, Eden. It started off with sewing baby shoes in the afternoon while she slept. Little Ladies coats were added once I made her one and got so many compliments on it. Our online store was opened about a year ago, to co-incide with our appearance in Your home and garden. I'd always dreamt of owning my own business and really wanted one that complimented my own products and tastes. I found alot of the products I was admiring on pinterest and international blogs just weren't available in New Zealand, so it's been great fun sourcing some unique products for children's rooms, and feeding my decorating obsession too!

Little Ladies Coat

Naming...
My husband came up with the idea of MollyCoddle and I added Miss for a more girly twist.

Felt Ball Garland & Nesting Dolls

Favourite product...
I absolutely love our range of hooks. When I was doing Edens room in preparation for her arrival, I searched high and low for some cute colourful hooks for the back of her door and couldn't find any in New Zealand. I finally found some in the UK! They were expensive and poor quality, she's bent them when tugging (as children do) on coats. So I'm very pleased to be importing the range we do. I love all the products I make too and we now have a section just for these which you can view here.

Vintage Ballerina Cushion Cover

Daily...
It varies daily, but we're pretty busy! We like to get out in the mornings and usually have an activity on, such as ballet, music, playgroup or (ahem..)a coffee catch up. Eden goes to preschool a few afternoons a week and I sew/blog/package for MissMollyCoddle while Ben has an afternoon nap. We might get out for a walk or play at a local playground before it's all on with the late afternoon domestic madness! I try to relax once the kids are in bed, but sometimes sew or do a bit of work for MissMollyCoddle if I need to.

Little Ladies Parisian Coat

Owning...
I love the creative side of it, coming up with new ideas, colour/fabric combinations for our products. I love all the positive feedback from lovely customers and I get great pleasure from seeing our products in use, both my creations and those I source for our store. I also love that I'm home with my children, but able to provide an extra source of income (always handy!), so a HUGE thank you to all our loyal customers!

Fairy Bread Pillowcase

Motivation...
It's not hard when you love what you do! I'm a bit obsessed with cute and colourful vintage style decor/kids accessories and just love making and sourcing them. The hardest aspect is finding the time.

Little Ladies Apron

Advice...
Trust your instincts and go for it! Stick to what you love and your unique angle, ignore what everyone else is doing and you'll be more likely to stand out and be unique.

Little Woodland Owl Shoes

Relaxing...
I relax by doing stuff actually. I'm really quite terrible at putting my feet up, well during the day anyway. I feel more relaxed if I've achieved something. But I'm pretty good at putting my feet up for a bit of telly and a cuppa at night. Looking forward to seeing what the contestants on the latest block have to offer.

Rambling Rose Gift Tape

From here...
We've got some pretty adorable products lined up and will be focusing on the decor side of the business. I want to provide a great place to shop for unique, fun and beautiful products for your children's rooms. Decorating a nursery, or changing a nursery to suit your growing child is such an exciting and precious time and we want to be part of that fun! I love doing my own children's rooms and I love finding/making products for yours too.
