Fi's business Ruby + Bear was just started in August this year. All of her designs are so beautiful and so pretty! Read on to find out more including lots of markets in the Canterbury region where you can see the Ruby + Bear range yourself!
Tell us a little bit about yourself
I’m Fiona but pretty much everyone calls me Fi.
I live with my husband, our nearly 3 year old daughter (who’s also my favourite model, muse and PA) and our dog just out of Christchurch.
We also have an ever increasing variety of farmyard animals.
When did you start Ruby + Bear?
Ruby + Bear went “live” in August 2017, but I’d been slowly chipping away at making our products for much of the year.

How did you name your business?
Ruby is our dog and Bear was one of our first pet lambs.
What is your favourite product within your range?
Oooh, that’s a tricky one. I only make a small run of most things which means the range is frequently changing and so is my favourite product.
My favourite thing to make is one off pompom necklaces; I love being able to make something unique that can be chosen to suit a child’s personality, favourite colours or outfit and enables them to express their own style.

What is one thing you do daily to make your business work?
I’m a list maker and love to see things being crossed off (although it seems the list is never completed).
My whole reason for starting Ruby + Bear is to have a job I enjoy that provides me with a creative outlet, and enables me to spend lots of quality time with Ava while she’s young.
I regularly reflect on this and consider my own values when it comes to decision making and keeping a work life balance.....that being said “if you find a job you love, you’ll never work another day in your life” rings true.

Where to from here with Ruby + Bear?
Longer term, I would like to see Ruby + Bear expand into boys wear, and possibly kids decor.
I’d like to do this using a business model that will empower other Mums and enable them to work at home, in their own time and to choose the hours and workload that suit them and their family.
For now, steadily growing the business and being a Mum must go hand in hand.
