Inside The Hive, written by Chops Vermeulen

I have been really enjoying talking to Chops in the last month. Her passion for small businesses is huge and so genuine and it is very exciting to have her here on my blog sharing more about herself!

Becky x

Rebecca asked me to write a blog post about The Hive and we discussed that the subject should be what I do - my personality - that makes it The Hive... and not like any another online marketplace.

I will have to start at the beginning as I started from a personal need; When I first started The Hive it was because I simply could not find a platform or should I say AFFORDABLE platform to sell my imported goods on... and I heard the same from lots of other sellers including those that handmake their products as well as services.

It was so frustrating to feel like there wasn't really any support for you when your business was tiny... not there yet to make enough so it could at least pay for its own costs...let alone making enough to pay for advertising.

And to be fair; it was actually relatively easy then compared to now; at that time reaching people on social media (the only FREE way to reach a crowd in one minute) was fairly easy compared to today!

I feel for the awesome people starting a business now - building from scratch... it is such a challenge.

I don't just have novice businesses joining my platform as what I do attracts a wide array of business owners, no matter what the size of their business is. But over the years I have kept the focus on those business owners who are in the early building stages. I've tried to do that by focusing on sharing information that helps others grow their business, by offering a positive and safe place to ask questions, by offering a platform for ANY type of small kiwi business (services are welcome too!!) by keeping the pricing affordable and by making sure the minimum results are worth the small fee paid.

To this day I feel there's plenty on offer in the big wide business world - in terms of advertising - for those already well established and that is awesome but I also want to make sure that those keen to 'get there', currently still in the 'infancy' of business get the support to become well established too!

The Hive itself - really - is also still in a growing phase. Obviously every business is always growing and trying to do better should always be on your agenda but when I say The Hive is in a growing phase, it's because it still very much depends on its community to help it grow and get more well known with the general public.

Without the help of the community around me I don't think it could ever work! and that's exactly what I love about it. It's exactly how I can keep it affordable; so the community thrives and as a result so does The Hive.

Helping businesses grow, helping business owners find their path of success just happens to help me grow my business too. I love it too though; see that suggestions work, that people feel happy and make great strides in their business because they connected to me and my business. My outset has always been - and probably always will be - to help businesses reach a biggger audience and when I achieve that then they help me spread the word. When you love what works, you spread the word, right? The more businesses join, the bigger The Hive and the further our reach for all the businesses we represent.

Obviously results also include sales through our website or their own sales channels - because the more people who SEE your business and products, the higher the chances of sales. It is a simple and awesome result of working together.

Hence the name; The Hive NZ

It is a collective of small business owners working together for the greater good of the community.

p.s. Our community group is open to all small kiwi business owners - it is a perfect way to see if joining The Hive should be your next move

Straight from The Hive website:

'The Hive NZ - shopping kiwi made easy! Our website features small kiwi businesses. You can shop with them through us. No messy multiple transactions though, no clicking back and forth through different websites - it's all super simple; ONE CART and ONE CUSTOMER SERVICE so within our website alone, you add what you want to order, ONE transaction and voila! My 'Little Lady'

Tell us a little bit about yourself...

I’m Andrea, I live in Dunedin with my husband and 3 ½ year old, Brody.
Hallo Brody is my full-time job (as well as being mum to my threenager when he’s not at daycare!).

Circle Name Tee

Tell us a little bit about Hallo Brody...

I launched Hallo Brody in January of this year (2018). I run a separate small Facebook business, which is a broader vinyl decal business and after a while I realised I loved the clothing side and really wanted to branch that side of my business out into something of its own and take it down a different path.

Hip Hop Tee

What is your favourite product from your business?

This is super tough, as I love everything I make! But currently my ‘Mother Hustler’ crews are a favourite, I wear mine heaps!

What is your favourite part of running your own business?

Working from home and having the flexibility to be able to work around time with my son! I can still spend time with him during the day and then when he’s napping (which is sadly super rare now ha) or asleep at night I can get work done.

What is one thing you do daily to make your business work?

Lists! Definitely lists! I make a new one each day with what needs to be done and in what order.

Bows Before Bros Onesie

Where to from here with your business?

I’ve recently launched the first of my adult items (my mum crews) and am hoping to soon get the rest of my adult clothing launched.

I have also been given a discount code to pass on to all of you!!
To receive 10% off your order at Skye Candle & Body Care, please use the code LIKEDBYBECKY.

My absolute favourite is the Jasmine scent, it is beautiful. The Shot Pot's are a great way to try out the different scents to find the one you love best! There are so many to choose from and last for around 10-20 hours per wax pot!! I have broken my Jasmine Shot Pot into 4 and have been burning it loads and I still have a quarter left.

These smell amazing!! They come in a pack of 6 tea lights which are in clear cups (not tin!). For some reason, this lovely detail makes them feel more luxurious. They are hand poured and made of 100% natural soy wax. Each tealight candle has a burn time of approx 4.5 hours.

I hadn't tried a Loofah soap before and so trying this was something new! The Fresh Citrus soap smells amazing and it foams up well and the Loofah leaves my skin feeling soft and extra clean. I really like it and am keen to try some of the other scents which include Lemongrass Ginger, White Lilac Lavender, Victorian Rose, Jasmine & Amber & Sandalwood!

French Vanilla Coffee Foaming Body Scrub
This looks good enough to eat and if you love the smell of coffee, you will love this! It is creamy and has lots of foam and leaves your skin feeling soft and smooth.

Thank you Kasturi, your products are stunning!

Beautifully Chosen Fabrics Handmade into Stunning Children's Products - Crafty Brown Fox

When I come across a business that has been created and built purely on the artists own handcrafted designs, I am always in awe.
In awe of the fabrics chosen and the designs created from these. The thought of the amount of time, attention to detail and creativeness that goes into every piece made!

I have only recently come across Crafty Brown Fox. Delia's business is one of those ones I am in awe of. Her fabric choices are beautiful and I love how each piece has been perfectly thought through.
'Crafty Brown Fox is all about inspiring imaginative play and creativity, in essence allowing kids to enjoy good old fashioned fun' - Delia Fox

Have a read and imagine playing as a kid again!
Becky x

About Delia...

Hi, my name is Delia Fox. I am a stay at home mum to 4 busy kids aged between 5 - 11. I am teacher trained and have always loved to sew. I remember sewing dolls and baby hats when I was very young to sell and give away as gifts. Sewing is a big part of who I am and I hope I’ll be able to use this gift for as long as possible.

About Crafty Brown Fox...

My family and I moved to New Zealand from Zimbabwe just over 4 years ago and as my kids were still quite young, I needed to be home with them as well as try to support our income. I decided to start a sewing business from home and sold my creations in a local craft shop in Ashburton. It was a great way to settle in a new community and meet lots of new people. I called myself Material Girl as I felt it suited me best at that time. I began a Facebook page as a place to record what I had created. It just grew out of that really. As I found products that defined my business I began to focus on kids. I felt there was a gap in the market for unique gifts, activities and accessories for kids. I wanted to provide authentic products that allowed kids to just be kids. I suppose I’m inspired by good old fashioned fun and imaginative play. I have recently changed my business name to Crafty Brown Fox allowing me to broaden my horizons. I have also recently launched my website which has been a dream and is constantly growing.

Naming Crafty Brown Fox...

When I first started my business Material Girl, I made a wide range of products. But as time went on I began refining my craft and my focus was more on creating for kids. My business name no longer suited my craft and I was not happy about putting a Material Girl label on products for boys. I decided to take the leap and change my business name. After much thought and research, I went with Crafty Brown Fox. I had always loved my surname Fox and I had asked my sister who is great at admin and marketing to come on board. Her surname is Brown. We are both pretty crafty so there you have it, Crafty Brown Fox.

Favourite part of running Crafty Brown Fox...

I feel so lucky to be able to do what I love, be creative and have the flexibility to be there for my family too. It really is a privilege to be able to live my dream.

What do you do daily to make your business work...

Each day I keep planning ahead. I look at where I’m at and where I’d like to be. I’m constantly on the look out for new ideas and my mind is constantly creating.

From here...

Well, I am always on the look out for more avenues to showcase and sell my products from. I’d love to supply a few more stores around New Zealand. I am constantly brainstorming with my sister who joined the team to help me market my business. It’s very exciting working together to make our business dream a reality.

Bec sent me one of her perfumes to try! PASSION - Inspired by Bombshell - Victoria Secret

It is just so pretty!
The perfume oil comes in a 10ml glass bottle with a gold lid and has gorgeous branding. It has a screw lid with a rollerball top.
The scent of PASSION is stunning. It is exactly as it is described on her website, fruity & floral. This is fabulous to know as correct descriptions of perfumes when you are buying them online are so important as you cannot try before you buy them. This perfume is definitely true to it's description. You only need to use a tiny amount and so the bottle will last a long time! I have been using PASSION after my morning shower and it lasts right through the day beautifully.
Priced at $24.95 with free NZ shipping.

'Our perfume oils are 100% uncut, pure and skin-safe. They are inspired by the original perfume and come in a 10ml glass bottle with a roll-on application. They are vegan, cruelty free, alcohol free, contain no additives, no GMO's, no phthalates and no parabens'.

There are 7 different perfumes in the Foxxglow range. I love their names!

Tell us a little bit about yourself

I grew up on a farm in South Canterbury near Timaru. I've always been the creative type and as a kid I was often getting my hands dirty making something.

I love travelling and am always dreaming of my next trip, somewhere tropical and chilled out I'm thinking for the next one. I did the whole London thing living and working there for two years, travelling around Europe and growing my list of places to travel. I also did a stint at a summer camp in Texas and am busting to get back to the States to see more.

Coming home after my travels, I knew I wanted to start something of my own but wasn’t quite sure what. One day my friends asked me to style and shoot some handbags, that was it, I was hooked. I had such a blast and thought this is what I should be doing! Lightbulb moment!

I’m a visual person with creative intuition and I love making things look pretty, so naturally, starting this wee delight of a business was a dream fit.

Tell us about Sophie Louise Creative

I started this new product styling and photography venture at the end of 2017. I have completely re branded and built a new website which has just gone live on May 1st. Previously Sophie Louise Creative was a little business I had designing and screen printing products like mugs, tea towels, children's pillowcases etc. I still love doing this and plan to keep doing the odd local craft market where I sell these products and I plan to put a little shop on my website where I can sell these items too, but for now I am focusing on Product Styling and Photography as this is where my love lies and I'm excited to see where it leads me.

What services do you provide?

I provide a remote product styling and photography service for small businesses to represent their products the best way possible. I am based in Christchurch but products can be couriered to me here. I love creating eye catching images that draw people in and tell the story of a product. There is so much thought that goes behind each shot and I love the creativity, planning and shooting of each image to get something unique and cohesive with the clients brand. I'm all about a fun experience for the client too, this is an exciting thing for them, to see their products styled and photographed beautifully so they can show their products off to their customers and show them what they have to offer. A moment to be proud for sure! One way I do this is by collaborating on a private Pinterest board, this is so cool because it gets the creative juices flowing and the client gets their input and I get a feel for the look and style they are going for. See my packages here:

What is your favourite part of running your own business?

My business is still very much in the early stages and I am still working full time as a screen printer. But my favourite thing is the creativity I get to have with this business, the planning, the shooting and the editing. Also the clients reaction when they first see their shots, that's a pretty rad thing to hear how happy they are. I also love having something that is mine, something that is developing and growing and it's all my brand built from scratch.

What is one thing you do daily to make sure your business works?

Social media is something I do everyday in one way or another, whether it is posting content, engaging with followers, planning new content etc all with the goal of driving traffic to the website and creating brand awareness.

Where to from here with your business?

I have lots of ideas rolling around in my head of where to next. In the near future I would like to offer a range of stock photography available on my website. But right now it's all about creating brand awareness and building a solid client base.

How can we find out more?
